There’s been talk of the January transfer window ever since the last one closed. It was a strange summer as it was dominated by Ronaldo and the club seemed to be holding out for him. Many people felt it was a matter of time before the deal was done but Manchester Utd dug in their heels and that was that. All the talk about Ronaldo unsetttled Robinho who was quoted quite often in the media as the player likely to be sold in the event of the Portuguese player coming to Madrid. In the end the club was right to sell Robinho as he clearly didnt want to stay but they were caught unawares. The club didnt want to sell him because the Ronaldo deal was dead and there aren’t many ready made replacements available in the market, and especially at such short notice. In the end the only player that came was Rafael Van der Vaart who in my opinion is a good player but the transfer campaign was dissapointing.
There were bids for Villa but it came too late as he had already committed himself to Valencia. Had Madrid moved earlier, I am confident he would now be a Real Madrid player and he would have come at a much lower price than the bids that the club were reported to have made. Villa, is without doubt one of the best strikers in the world and he would have injected some much needed pace as well as quality to the Madrid front line.
Ok, so who are the players being linked with Madrid at the moment. Lucas Podolski from Bayern Munich has been mentioned as a possible target for the January transfer window as he is currently out of favour at Bayern Munich. Personally I dont think he is RM material. Another player we have been linked with recently is Daniel Agger the Liverpool central defender. He has lost his place in the team but he is still a very capable player. However, his team mate Martin Skrtel suffered an injury recently and will be out till Christmas, thus offering Agger a chance to re-establish himself in the first team.
Looking further ahead, the papers have been talking about Karim Benzema who is one of the most exciting prospects out there. Currently playing for Lyon, he may be available during the summer and he can probably pick the team he wants as there will be no shortage of suitors. Similar to Ronaldo the Brazilian, he is very direct and his fantastic goal against Manchester United last season was an indication of his potential. Apparently he favours a move to Madrid but like many of these rumours, it is hard to tell fact from fiction. I for one wish it was fact.
